On Saturday, more than 700 U of M graduates packed FedEx Forum and received their diplomas at the morning procession, and another 1,600 crossed the stage during the afternoon session. With 2,321 graduates this semester, the spring 2012 class is the largest in school history. Since opening its doors in 1912, the university has given out more than 152,000 degrees.
In honor of the school's 100th anniversary, the U of M Alumni Association selected 101 alumni to be members of the "Centennial Class" and take part in Saturday's graduation ceremony. Each alumnus represented a year at the university.
After a brief opening statement by school president Shirley Raines, Gov. Bill Haslam gave the commencement address, offering graduates advice on how to deal with life's disappointments and being humble, and telling them to be gracious toward others.
"For Memphis and West Tennessee to be healthy, the University of Memphis graduates have to play a role in the community," Haslam said.
"Work hard. Work really, really hard. Life is like a relay race, and the friends and family who have helped you along the way will pass you the baton and say, 'It's your turn.'

在当天上午十点举行的毕业典礼中，文理学院（the College of Arts and Sciences）、艺术学院（the College of Communication and Fine Arts）、（the University College）分别向其毕业生颁发了学位证书。在下午三点举行的毕业典礼中，来自商学院（the Fogelman College of Business & Economics）、教育学院（the College of Education）、健康和人文科学专业（Health and Human Sciences）、工程学院（the Herff College of Engineering）、护理专业（the Loewenberg School of Nursing）、信息管理专业（the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders）和公共卫生学专业（the School of Public Health）的毕业生也拿到了自己相应的学位，为几年来辛勤的学习生活画上了圆满的句号。
在此次毕业典礼中，孟菲斯大学校友委员会还专门选出在孟菲斯大学历史上极具影响力的101位校友，组成“Centennial Class”，以庆祝建校一百周年。每一位校友分别代表着孟菲斯大学成立以来包括今年的每一届毕业生。在整个毕业典礼过程中，他们依次上台，从孟菲斯大学校长Shirley Raines和校友委员会成员中接过代表学校荣誉的奖章和证书，以表彰他们多年来对学校做出的突出贡献。据统计孟菲斯大学在过去的一百年中，共授出15万2000多个各类学位，在田纳西州的高等教育中起到巨大的作用。

1912年 9月10日，西田纳西州师范学院在孟菲斯成立，第一任校长. Seymour A. Mynders博士，这是孟菲斯大学的前身
1925年更名为西田纳西州教师学院
1941年改为孟菲斯州立学院
1946年J Millard (Jack) Smith成为学校的第二任校长，也是第一位毕业的校友成为校长。
1957年田纳西州议会立法将学校转变成综合性大学
1959年 学校招收了第一位黑人学生
1966年学校第一次招收博士班学生
1994年 学校改名为现在的校名“孟菲斯大学”
2011年孟菲斯大学破纪录的招收学生超过21,000人，成为田纳西州仅次于中田纳西州立大学和诺城田纳西大学的学生数目第三多田纳西大学。
